FAQs about renewable energy for businesses in the Northeast

  • Will solar electric power work for my business in the Northeast?

Yes. If you have a flat roof or an unshaded, sloped roof facing spproximate south then your property is a favorable site. Some other orientation (southwest or southeast) are also favorable.

  • Is solar power reliable in the Northeast where we get sunshine less frequently?

When NuWatt Energy sizes your system, it bases the design on a 30-yr meteorological data of the amount of sunshine throughout the year. The proposed designed output is then guranteed for the 25 years warranty of the system.

On the other hand, solar energy systems built today are very reliable. They have proven to be dependable sources of energy for large office buildings, mass retailers and governmental agencies, supplying megawatts of energy. Some of the largest companies in the world have buildings powered by solar energy, including eBay, FedEx, WalMart, Whole Foods, and others.

  • Why should I choose NuWatt Energy?

    • NuWatt Energy has one of the most experienced design, build and project management teams in the industry. Our solid experience in the construction and engineering industry is unique and our relationships within the industry make the experience of going solar an easy experience for you.
    • Our philosophy is to work around you; the customer, and make the installation process least intrusive as we know how valuable your business is.

    • We select only best of breed equipment —we build our systems to out-last.
    • NuWatt Energy™ prides itself on the high quality customer service and we make it a point to keep customers' satisfaction as our business priority.
  • What makes solar a good investment?

Buying a solar system represents a one-time cost that will provide you with “free” electricity for 25 or more years. You will see immediate reductions to your company’s monthly utility bill. The actual payback and rate or return of your system will be determined by your electric rates, state incentives and federal tax benefits. There has never been a better time to purchase a solar electric system. NuWatt Energy™ will develop a detailed after-tax financial analysis as part of our proposal.

  • Will my electric bill get reduced after installing solar system?

Absolutely! Not only you will see lower energy bills in the short term, by using solar you will shelter your business from future energy bill hikes that occur year over year. Most businesses' peak demand coincides with mid-day which is the time when solar power production peaks.

Clean: You produce energy that has no carbon dioxide emission and no adverse impact on the environment.

Environmental Stewardship that sets your business apart and gain you the clean-energy advantage.

  • What if the business can not afford upfront payments?

Businesses and institutions can get solar energy through Purchase Power Agreement (PPA). With a PPA, a third party assumes the ownership position of the solar system and retains the tax benefits of ownership. In return, your company would agree to purchase 100% of the power from the array, at fixed rates that are typically less than current utility rates.

  • What is a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement)?

A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is a legal contract between an electricity producer and a power purchaser (client) where the purchaser buys electricity from the generator for a stipulated term at an established rate. In a typical PPA, the PPA provider secures project financing, maintains the system and sells the electricity to the electricity producer. There is no capital cost for the client. A PPA can play a key role in financing a solar electricity project as it enables customers to take advantage of low-cost electricity with long-term pricing stability, a smaller carbon footprint, and a greener public image. Our PPA partners provide all necessary maintenance, monitoring, service and repairs so the customer can concentrate on their core business and not on becoming a solar energy expert. In addition, the PPA provider as the owner, provides the required insurance on the system. Many PPAs wlil provide the client with an option to buy the system after a given initial term

  • What maintenance is required?

Your solar energy system requires very little maintenance, largely because it has no moving parts. All your system requires is minimal shade, occasional cleaning and inspection. We suggest that you keep an eye on trees that may shade your system and keep them trimmed. We also remotely monitor your system output to ensure that your system is performing as it should. In the unlikely event that your system underperforms, NuWatt Energy will alert you and help to remedy the situation. If your system is a PPA, maintenance and warrantee repairs are included as part of our service to you.

  • Do I need a battery back-up system?

No. Battery systems are expensive and are not recommended. All NuWatt Energy solar systems are connected to the utility grid so you always have access to a power source. You never have to worry about “running out” of power.

  • How much electricity will a photovoltaic system produce?

Typically, a 100kW PV system in the Northeast will produce approximately 113,000 kWh of AC electricity anually. With the state and Federal incentives along with being in a region where some of the highest electric rates in the country, make going solar very rewarding in the short and long run.

  • How much would a photovoltaic system cost?

The net cost to you varies considerably by state based on available rebates and incentives. NuWatt Energy™ has the knowledge and experience to navigate the complex incentive marketplace and will assist you as needed to identify incentives in your area and complete applications and maximize your return on your investment.

  • How long will it take to get my new solar system up and running?

A typical residential roof installation takes about 3-5 days and a typical commercial installation takes about 1-3 weeks from the day we begin the installation. The length of time depends on the complexity of your roof and the number of panels that will be installed. The estimated installation time will be included in the design proposal presented to you by NuWatt Energy.

  • What is the environmental benefit of installing a photovoltaic (PV) system?

A 100 kW of photovoltaic capacity will avoid the release of 1.5 million tons of carbon over a 25 year lifetime that would have occurred if had you purchased that power from your utility. This is the environmental equivalent of planting 14,000 trees.

  • What happens when snow covers the solar panels?

After a snow storm, when the sun comes out, the solar radiation penetrates the snow and heats up the collector melting the snow from the bottom up. The melting at the surface of the collector allows the snow to slide off the 'typically' sloped panels.

  • What is a Renewable Energy Credit (REC)?

A Renewable Energy Credit (REC) is the value of the environmental attributes of the clean energy that your solar electric system will produce. These credits have an established value in an actively traded market and is different for each state. NuWatt Energy™ can assist you capturing the market value of your RECs if you so wished.
